John Mullaney Artist Statement
John is an artist based in the South West of England. His photographic practice captures landscapes, portraits. He is particularly interested in capturing moments in time and historical elements in landscapes that suggest a narrative and the passing of time. When taking portraits he focuses on the personality of the sitter and likes the images to tell a story.
He is influenced by Ansel Adams’ work because he captures the ambience of a scene and identifies with his surroundings. He immerses the viewer into the location, creating and provoking a feeling of space. Irving Penn said ‘A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it, it is in a word, effective’.
